10 CATHOLIC APPS WORTH KNOWING - NOT A RANKING - JUST TEN GOOD ONES
I spent lots of time in this space over the past year - building Devotio, talking to other Catholics building and using apps, and hearing what people actually use in their faith life. Along the way, I've come across a handful of apps that do a lot to support Catholics.
This isn't a ranking. I'm not interested in telling you which is "best". “Best” is to be in the presence of our Lord at Mass and in adoration - this will never be replaced. The best Apps will depend entirely on what you're looking for. It's just ten apps worth knowing about, in alphabetical order, each doing something real for Catholics trying to stay close to our Lord.
Amen
A free audio prayer app from the Augustine Institute, which also has a wonderful YouTube channel. Guided rosaries, daily reflections, Gregorian chant, a whole section for Eucharistic adoration. If you'd rather listen than read, this is a great place to go, in my humble opinion.
The Ascension App
Home of Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz, alongside the Rosary, daily Mass reading reflections, and study plans for going deeper into Sunday's readings before you even get to church. A lot of the content comes as short daily videos, which suits people who'd rather watch than read. Also check out their Youtube channel.
Devotio
I built this one, so I'll keep it brief and let you judge for yourself.
Devotio is a free Catholic prayer app. The full Rosary across all twenty mysteries, the Stations of the Cross, the Surrender Novena, 165 saints mapped to feast days and virtues, and 1,140 Scripture passages across the Douay-Rheims, the Catholic Public Domain Version, and the Latin Vulgate. An Intentions Diptych holds the people you carry into prayer. No account, no subscription, no tracking - everything stays on your device.
Fio
Not a prayer app - it’s a Catholic streaming platform. Podcasts, music, audiobooks, over a thousand Catholic creators in one place. It is the Catholic answer to Spotify, if you've ever wanted theology or sacred music without wading through everything else on a general platform this will be for you. The UI is really cool. I highly recommend this
Hallow
The most widely downloaded Catholic prayer app right now, by some distance. Guided meditations, the Bible in a Year, examinations of conscience, reflections narrated by a range of Catholic voices. Hallow has an incredible amount of content.
iBreviary
The Liturgy of the Hours and the daily Mass readings, in multiple languages, plus a range of blessings and rites from the Roman Missal. Simple, portable, and trusted by a lot of people for a long time.
Laudate
One of the original all-in-one Catholic apps. Daily readings, the Liturgy of the Hours, an examination of conscience, and a genuinely wide library of traditional prayers, many in Latin too.
Magnificat
The app version of the monthly missal a lot of us grew up seeing at the back of the pew. Daily Mass readings, reflections, hymns, morning and evening prayer - same format, on your phone.
Truthly
Newer, and built around AI features that answer apologetics questions, alongside courses and a daily saint feature. Worth a look if you're curious about how AI is being used for catechesis right now.
Universalis
Daily Mass readings and the Liturgy of the Hours, calculated properly for your own region and calendar. Their website is a quiet workhorse behind a lot of Catholic apps, including mine.
That's ten. Different tools, same goal - staying a little closer to prayer and our Lord, a little more often. May God bless you.
Devotio - Catholic Prayer App is free to download for iPhone and Android.
